Booking.com has plans to develop an app that offers micro-stay hotel booking options to their users in Los Angeles. Micro-stays are booking periods in a hotel room that can be booked by the hour, not just for full nights.

Booking.com’s hotel micro-stay app is a hotel booking service that provides recommendations for hotel micro-stay options in Los Angeles at low, hourly rates. Unlike other services such as Trivago, Airbnb, Expedia, etc., the app is unique because it gives people more flexibility when booking accommodation in the case of being in between business meetings, facing flight delays, or wanting a place to rest in the midst of their travel, thus fulfilling their needs in a more financially efficient manner than if they were to traditionally book a full night’s stay.

We’ll know this is true when the app’s micro-stay booking periods are being filled up at a higher average daily rate than the Los Angeles based listings of other hotel booking services.

Mapping out assumptions

Mapping out assumptions

I first listed some assumptions I had about the market and target users so that I could then prioritize and validate them. By doing so, I was able to better understand the problem at hand and see where I need to conduct more research. This ensured that I didn’t waste resources working on a product that solves a nonexistent problem or a poor solution to a problem. I then mapped out these assumptions on a risk-importance graph to better visualize which assumptions I should be looking into first.

Since micro-stay options are usually popular among businesspeople, those who are traveling for leisure are noted to turn to the option when facing a delayed flight. However, from the interviews, it seems like there are many factors at play when facing a delayed flight or long layover situation that does not necessarily warrant a need for micro-stay hotels.

After ideating a few solutions and narrowing down on what I wanted to focus on, I created low fidelity wireframes to better visualize what my solution could potentially look like. Although the EntryLevel project did not require any wireframes or prototypes, I figured at least sketching my ideas out would help in a real world setting when I'm working with other designers and engineers. In my final submission, I would need to explain my product decisions so stakeholders and the rest of my product team understand where each feature fell within the product roadmap. An overall key focus was to design for the MVP version and emphasize a simple and straightforward user flow.

A simple and straightforward booking process

The booking process is very minimal, requiring users to only input the most necessary information such as their name, contact information, booking information, and payment. This allows users to not only find but also book their micro stays quickly, which is helpful because micro stays often require fast decisions as a result of being short term stays.

Since micro stays are short term stays, users often want to go straight to their rooms to rest and relax without wasting time. The online check in feature allows users to skip the line at the front desk and gain access to their room to enjoy their stay for the full short term period they've booked. They are also able to check out of their stay in the same quick, one step manner as they head to their next stop.

Once the designs were finalized, I created a presentation to submit to EntryLevel's team that walked through the MVP design end to end, breaking down the solution and explaining features along the way.

5 star average grading for EntryLevel's final project submission

5 star average grading for EntryLevel's final project submission

As part of the EntryLevel course, each person's final project submission would be peer reviewed by others who also took the same course. Each person provided a rating between 1 and 5 stars. My submission was able to earn a 5 star rating across the board with others highlighting the creativity, information organization, and research efforts.

Increased user satisfaction during user research

Increased user satisfaction during user research

Although this project did not require us to track success metrics, I informally tracked user satisfaction throughout my process. With every iteration of my project, I saw user satisfaction increase as I came closer and closer to a proper solution. It was nice to see how users felt like their needs were being met as I moved from project conception to high fidelity mockups.

On the right track

On the right track

I was able to compare my research and solution proposal to that of others' work both in the same cohort as well as in previous cohorts, and saw that I had similar findings. As I was new to the concept of micro stays, I was not sure if my project was headed in the right direction, so it was a comfort to know that my research skills and potential solution aligned with what others had also discovered and envisioned.

Stakeholder review

Stakeholder review

If this were a real project with Booking.com's actual team, I would take my project proposal and present it to their stakeholders for feedback and buy in. I would also use this time to see how my proposal aligns with Booking.com's business and product goals and if any adjustments need to be made for my proposal to get the green light.

Refine the proposal

Refine the proposal

At the moment, my product proposal could be for a brand new product or a new feature that would be integrated into the existing product. The stakeholder review could provide valuable insights on the best path forward. Additionally, I would gather feedback from other designers and engineers at Booking to refine the proposal further and effectively address any concerns.

Product roadmap and resource allocation

Product roadmap and resource allocation

If given the green light, I would start creating a roadmap that outlines the timeline, milestones, and deliverables for the project as well as Identify the necessary resources (i.e., team members, budget, technology) and allocate them accordingly to start properly designing and developing the first iteration of the product.
